The majority of English-speaking Canadians at the turn of the twentieth century were immigrants from the British Isles and Ireland or their descendants. Cigar-makers could expect customers to recognize Punch, a character from traditional English puppet theatre, or to identify readily with nostalgic Scottish themes.
