Otto Dix, Zerfallender Kampfgraben (Trench in Ruins), 1924
© Estate of Otto Dix/SODRAC (2014)/National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, Ontario

In this print, Otto Dix depicts a trench in the aftermath of violent shelling. In the dark, crumbling ground, bodies and skeletons merge with the earth. In the distance, Dix uses light, a traditional symbol of hope, to expose an endless field of shell holes.
