Until the advent of the travelling cinema and television, troupes of shadow puppet players circulated through the villages of Southern India presenting all-night productions of the epics mixed with folk tales. The puppets, made of goat skin, display a bold graphic style related to folk painting and little of the elaborate cut work better known in the Indonesian puppets that they inspired.
